The Muslim extremists taking over British jails:

Friday morning in Wakefield Prison and Yusuf Rahim joins 60 other Muslim prisoners as they head to the jail’s gym to say their prayers.

If nothing else, it is a chance to get out of his cell and take a break from the normal routine.

The same goes for the halal food the 47-year-old is served every mealtime — Rahim is particularly partial to the spicy vegetable curry — an improvement on the normal prison fare.

And there is one other advantage to his new-found religion. Because, as one of Britain’s most reviled murderers, he is banking on his Muslim ‘brothers’ providing him with some level of protection during his time inside.

At least that’s what Rahim — a man who will be familiar to most by his real name, Levi Bellfield — hoped would happen when he converted to the Muslim faith not long after being sentenced to life for the murder and rape of schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

‘He found out a paedophile had been slashed in Wakefield and thought he would be next: he was a marked man after he was convicted,’

revealed his sister Ann-Marie Bellfield. ‘He said they were good boys and would look after him ... he got friendly with Islamic guys and didn’t have a problem.’

Given the character of the man, few will be surprised to learn that Bellfield’s religious conversion — he reportedly refers to Islam as ‘this beautiful faith’ — was motivated by cowardice and self-preservation.

But it also shines a spotlight on a much wider issue that is causing widespread concern across government and beyond.

In recent years, the number of Muslim prisoners has increased dramatically. Ministry of Justice figures show a rise from 6,571 in 2004 to 12,255 a decade later, meaning that Muslims now account for almost 15 per cent of all inmates.

In high security jails, the figure is higher still — one in five; while in one Category A establishment, almost half are Muslims.

Taken on its own, the disproportionate numbers of Muslims being jailed is in itself cause for concern (Muslims comprise roughly 5 per cent of the population of England and Wales).

But what is particularly worrying the authorities is the potential it offers for radicalisation.

As the number of Islamist extremists locked up for terror offences increases, so they are finding fertile ground among fellow prisoners. Indeed, it is claimed that some are deliberately getting custodial sentences so that they can target this pool of disaffected young men.

In turn, there is growing evidence of the spread within prisons of Muslim gangs who wield so much power that other prisoners feel coerced into converting or doing as they bid in other ways.

‘If our prisons are going to be filled with more terrorism offenders, then I think they will also get even more full with radicalised individuals,’ warns Jonathan Russell, head of policy at counter-extremism think tank Quilliam.
‘There is a significant danger that our prisons will become net exporters of extremism, when, surely, if we are arresting terrorists, they should be net reducers.

‘And if we don’t get it right, the very real danger is that when people come out they will be further radicalised and further hardened to commit violence.’

Indeed, so pressing is the problem that the Government has announced it is considering the possibility of setting up ‘jihadi jails’ — prisons which solely house Islamist extremist terrorists.

Last Monday, Mr Cameron hinted at this radical new approach as he described tackling religious extremism as the ‘new front’ in prisons.

‘We have about 1,000 prisoners who have been identified as extremists or vulnerable to extremism,’ he said. ‘Some of these individuals are preying on the weak, forcing conversion to Islam, and spreading their warped view of the world.

‘I am prepared to consider major changes, from the Imams we allow to teach in prison to changing the locations and methods of dealing with prisoners convicted of terrorism.’

Quite what is behind the rise in the number of inmates within the prison population generally who identify themselves as Muslim is not entirely clear.

One factor is that if you are young and come from a poorer background, you are more likely to come into contact with the criminal justice system.

The Muslim population in Britain is, generally, younger and disproportionately concentrated in lower socio-economic groups. The upshot is a Muslim prison population growing faster than the Muslim population at large.

New figures obtained in the past few days from the Statistical Unit at the Ministry of Justice under a Freedom of Information Act request show that out of 88,000 prisoners in June 2015, 12,660 were Muslims.

Increases have occurred across the country. For example, in five years the number of Muslim prisoners at Pentonville prison in North London increased from 240 to 377.

At Wormwood Scrubs, West London, there are 372 Muslims — up from 284; while at The Verne, in Dorset, the numbers increased from 84 in 2010 to 225 last year, a surge of 167 per cent.

But the highest proportions of Muslim prisoners are to be found at the country’s eight top security jails. Figures show that 1,229 out of 5,885 inmates, or 20.8 per cent, are Muslim. That is an increase of 23 per cent in five years.

Belmarsh prison in London has the most Muslim inmates, 248 of 868 — or more than 28 per cent.

But proportionately by far the highest is Whitemoor prison in Cambridgeshire, where roughly 44 per cent follow the Islamic faith. It held 199 Muslims in 2015 out of an official population of 447.

Caged inmates include rapists, killers and terrorists, among whom is Zia Ul Haq, 35, of Wembley, London, who was jailed for plotting to bomb a London Tube tunnel and set off a radioactive ‘dirty’ bomb.

Of course, there is no reason why a large grouping of Muslim prisoners per se should cause any more problems than if they were, say, Christian. But staff at Whitemoor say that such is their gang-like behaviour that they fear it is putting the safety of the institution in jeopardy.

‘In Whitemoor, we have a number of different Muslim groups: all are ultra religious, very insular and can be very intimidating,’ one staff member told the Mail, speaking on condition of anonymity. ‘There are radical groups on all three wings.

They follow a very strict interpretation of Islam. They pray five times a day, follow a strict diet and do not mix with any other prisoners. They don’t watch television or play on computer games.

‘You see what’s going on and think that some of these people are being indoctrinated by some very strong personalities.’

These gangs effectively run their wings — meaning that other prisoners are left with a difficult choice as to how they should react.

‘Every new prisoner will be targeted by the religious gangs,’ he says. ‘They will tell him to join his “brothers”. They will offer him protection and support providing he prays five times a day and follows their version of Islam.

‘They will tell him that they are not interested in his crime providing he promises to be a good Muslim.

‘They will offer the same deal to anyone; it’s a case of “that was your previous life and that doesn’t interest us”. I would say about half of the Muslim groups on a couple of the wings are converts to Islam.’

And he added: ‘There is some sort of incident every day in Whitemoor involving the Muslim groups. It might be a row about the food or someone claiming their prayer time has been interrupted.

‘These can be violent episodes, and sometimes they are concocted as some sort of power play, which is directed not just at the other prisoners but the guards as well.’

Tensions at the jail were also highlighted in a report based on a series of interviews with inmates by Alison Liebling, a professor of criminology at Cambridge University in 2011.

Some told researchers they were bullied into changing religion, while those who resisted said they were too scared to cook bacon in communal kitchens in case it caused offence.

Others claimed the jail was a ‘recruiting ground’ for extremism, as young inmates were ‘in awe’ of convicted terrorists held there.

The report added that there was considerable ignorance and confusion about the Islamic faith, meaning ‘those with extremist views could fill a gap in knowledge with misinformation and misinterpretation’.

This is of particular concern given the increased number of Islamist extremists being jailed for terror-related offences.

Last month, Nick Hardwick, the outgoing chief inspector of prisons, warned: ‘There are undoubtedly a small number of very dangerous men motivated by a religion or ideology who are trying to recruit other people so they will go on to commit offences linked to that ideology or religion.’

It is a point echoed by Steve Gillan, general secretary of the Prison Officers’ Association. ‘The dangers of gang cultures and radicalisation of young Muslim men is a real concern, as within our prison system it can have a destabilising effect,’ he said.

‘Added to this, the Government has cut prison officer numbers by 25 per cent since 2010. This is a recipe for disaster at a time when the UK is under a huge threat from terrorism.’

Beyond the very real risks of radicalisation, prison officers are also having to deal with the fall-out caused by tensions between Muslim gangs and other inmates.

‘These gangs use their faith as a cover for violence and intimidation, threatening non-Muslims and pressuring them to convert to Islam.

‘I have got many prisoners who are so fearful of Muslims that they feel they need to form alliances with them for protection,’ one prison governor recently revealed.

‘There are some vulnerable young boys who will have converted because they are afraid. I think it is more a gang issue than radicalisation, but this is a big issue.’

Joe Chapman, a former prison officer who now acts as a prison law consultant, believes the problem of so-called ‘convenience conversions’ is on the increase.

‘This job takes me to 40 or 50 prisons over the year, throughout the country,’ he said. ‘It has become obvious to me that it’s a growing problem.

‘About half a dozen of my clients have directly reported problems with being forced to convert — those who weren’t Muslim when they came in, and those who were and have been forced to look at more radical ideas about their faith.’

One young woman whose brother is serving a lengthy sentence in a top security prison in England told how he was being bullied by members of a Muslim gang who were trying to force him to convert to Islam.

‘He just looks like a broken man,’ she said, again asking not to be identified. ‘He’s tearful on visits, and I’m just really scared for him. He’s been physically assaulted. He’s had black eyes. In the showers, he got threatened with a knife.

‘He’s not going to back down. He’s not going to convert for anyone. He just spends his time hiding in his cell. He’s got at least another five years to serve. I don’t know how much longer he can hold out.’

Another serving prisoner told the Mail: ‘Some people really struggle when they come in to prison. They will try to find some support — and the Muslim groups offer that. A lot of black men in their early 20s who are in on violence or drug charges are targeted.

‘They would maybe have been part of gangs for a long time. But in prison, they’re on their own.

I’ve seen guys who’ve been beaten up or bullied, had their fags nicked and their cells turned over, that sort of thing, and then they’ll be befriended by some of the Muslims.

‘Then the guy will put in a formal request saying that he wants to change his religion. He might have a meeting with the governor and he goes through the process of becoming a Muslim.

Everyone knows why they are doing it — it’s not as if they have suddenly found God.’

As for those who refuse, such is the influence of these gangs that in some prisons they have started to impose a ‘protection tax’ on anyone who does not follow Islam.

The tax, called jizya, is reported to have been levied by gangs of Islamist extremists at Belmarsh, Long Lartin, Woodhill and Whitemoor prisons.

According to evidence supplied to a government-appointed team investigating extremism in jails, inmates claimed to have been bullied and threatened with violence unless they made payments with phone cards, food, tobacco or drugs.

Some of the alleged victims said they were told to arrange for friends and family on the outside to transfer money to nominated accounts.

To that background, there are growing calls for the Government to act quickly and decisively.
The appointment of Peter Clarke, Scotland Yard’s former head of counter-terrorism command, as the new chief inspector of prisons is seen as a sign that Justice Secretary Michael Gove is preparing to step up the fight against extremist gangs in jail.

Mr Gove has also appointed Ian Acheson, a former Home Office official, to carry out the aforementioned investigation into extremism and radicalisation in prisons and to develop ways of tackling the problem.

As for the Prime Minister’s suggestion last week that extremist Islamist prisoners could simply be segregated from the wider prison population, if past history is anything to go on, such a move would almost certainly be challenged through the courts.

Last year two terrorists linked to Al Qaeda successfully brought a case after being kept in solitary confinement.

The Supreme Court ruled that Kamel Bourgass, who murdered a policeman and plotted to spread the poison ricin on the streets of the UK, and Tanvir Hussain, jailed for a plot to blow up transatlantic planes, had been segregated ‘unlawfully’ in jail.

This was despite evidence that the pair had bullied fellow inmates in a bid to radicalise them. Hussain, it was claimed, had been preaching through his cell window ‘in a determined attempt to convert non-Muslim prisoners to his own interpretation of Islamic ideals’.

As the Mail revealed this month, the pair received more than £75,000 in legal aid to successfully challenge their treatment in court.

It is against this background that the question must be asked as to how much the Government will be able to crack down on this growing problem — even if it wants to.

London Mayor candidate Sadiq Khan's links to Islamic extremist

LABOUR’S candidate for London Mayor faced fresh questions over his extremist links after it emerged his ex-brother-in-law was a hate preacher.
Mr Khan claims to have distanced himself from jihad-monger Makbool Javaid, but The Sun can reveal the Tooting MP also had family links to four members of the extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir.
Speaker-turned-lawyer Makbool Javaid was married to the Labour MP’s sister Farhat from 1989 until 2011 — on Friday shocking footage of him preaching anti-western hate emerged.
In 2007 Mr Khan admitted that he was related to four other men through evil Javaid who were members of Hizb ut-Tarir.

The outlawed fundamentalist group wanted to turn Britain into an Islamic state under Sharia law.
Mr Khan’s former brother-in-law also belonged to the notorious Islamist group Al-Muhajiroun and spoke alongside banned cleric Omar Bakri.
Shocking footage shows of him savaging the West during a central London rally in 1997, as the crowd chanted “Allahu Akbar”.
Javaid’s name even appears on a “fatwa” declaring holy war upon Britain and the USA.
Mr Khan claims: “I have had no contact with him for more than a decade,” but last night the Tories were quick to go on the attack.

Andrew Bridgen MP said: “Yet again, Khan is showing terrible judgement on who he associates with. He’s clearly experimented with the wrong company.
“For a man a bidding to take charge of the world’s greatest city, there are questions to answer here: when did he find out about these radical views and why didn’t he speak out earlier?”
Sadiq Khan — who has spoken out about his connections to extremism in the past — said in 2007 that believed “Hizb ut-Tahrir have abhorrent views and there is no love lost between me and distant relations of mine”.

Last night he added: “Extremism is a cancer in British society that must be rooted out.
“The sad reality is that most British Muslims have come across people with these hideous views, and I’ve always been honest that I have too.
He also said: “The safety of all Londoners is my top priority”, adding “I have outlined tough plans to root out extremism and tackle radicalisation as Mayor of London.”
Makbool Javaid told Friday's Evening Standard: “Twenty years ago I was naive. I certainly didn’t realise how easily some of my actions could be interpreted as being critical of Britain — the best country in the world.
“This was nearly two decades ago now and I have grown and changed. I love Britain, I love the rich diversity of London and I love our culture.”

Mosque Opened by Prince Charles Radicalized ISIS Members…

When it was unveiled by Prince Charles four months before the 9/11 attacks , the Al Manaar mosque proudly opened its doors to the outside world.
Smiling as he was shown around the prayer hall in the new Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre, as it was then known, the Prince praised the modern building in west London.
Now, 15 years on, the same mosque has emerged as the focal point of a network ofIslamic State extremists which included Mohammed Emwazi - AKA Jihadi John - and two other men, together known as “the Beatles” by the captives they tortured in Syria.
At least nine jihadis, including Emwazi and the failed 21/7 bombers, were radicalised here, in the area better known for the annual Notting Hill Carnival and Portobello Road market.
Ladbroke Grove is fast becoming known as a breeding ground for ISIS killers, just like other notorious terror hotspots such as Dewsbury, where the 7/7 suicide bombers came from, and Luton, Beds.

Worshippers visiting the mosque for afternoon prayers were saying nothing about the terrorists who congregated in this tucked-away spot beneath the Westway A40 flyover.
Volunteers in the mosque office also refused to comment on the jihadist links.
The Al Manaar Mosque is also trying to distance itself from the jihadists.
On Sunday its director Saleha Islam said: “Mosques are not like Churches that cater for parishioners, instead it is a place for worship where people come to pray, what sort of ideas they have in their minds is something that we do not know of and we cannot control.”
REUTERS/SITE Intel GroupMohammed Emwazi
Worship: Mohammed Emwazi is believed to have worshipped at the mosque
In a statement on the mosque’s website added: “We are aware that certain people have joined ISIS who live in the area of Ladbroke Grove, we have always condemned the actions of these extremists and will continue to do so.”
Yet security experts believe the Al Manaar centre, a short walk from David Cameron’s multi-million pound family home, has long been a hub for young British Muslims subsequently involved in the Syrian war.
The mosque is now being watched as closely as the notorious Finsbury Park mosque in north London when hook-handed cleric Abu Hamza was recruiting terrorists there.
It is believed the purpose-built mosque was where Emwazi got to know Allexanda Kotey, a Queens Park Rangers fan.
Kotey, identified as the man likely to be “Ringo”, allegedly talked openly of suicide bombing from a stall in the quiet street outside the mosque.
The suspected third “Beatle”, Aine Davis, the son of a dinner lady, is originally from nearby Hammersmith and met his wife at another local mosque before fleeing to Yemen.
All three members of the all-British cell had formed a close bond in London, long before their reign of terror began in the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa.
Emwazi was the first of the group to be unmasked after he appeared in a string of gruesome ISIS videos beheading hostages including Britons David Haines and Alan Henning .
The masked executioner, who became a notorious figurehead for jihadists worldwide, was killed in a US drone missile strike in Raqqa last November.
This week Kotey and Davis were revealed to also be part of the “Beatles” cell, which gained a reputation as the cruellest of all the IS guards, keeping their hostages in a state of permanent fear.
Their torture techniques were said to include electric shocks, waterboarding, and mock executions - including a staged crucifixion.
PAAine Davis
Terror cell: Aine Davis is also believed to be part of the ISIS Beatles
They have beheaded at least seven British, American, and Japanese hostages and 18 members of the Syrian army.
A Danish hostage, Daniel Rye, who was released in June 2014, recalled in a book published last year how “Ringo” kicked him 25 times in his ribs on his 25th birthday, telling him it was a gift.
In his chilling book, Rye wrote that “George” dominated the group of jailers and was the most violent and unpredictable.
Rye also described being taken to an open grave where a suspected spy was shot by Emwazi on “George”’s instructions. The sickening scene was filmed by “Ringo”.
Rye said the British terrorists forced him and other hostages to climb into the grave, where they were photographed.
Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary
Hot bed: Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary was also a worshipper at the mosque
In online social media posts “Ringo” has stated online that he is “as British as they come” adding he was “born and raised in Shepherd’s Bush, was a big QPR fan, love a good old fry up in the mornings”.
Kotey was identified by ITN News after it emerged that he also went by the name Big Sid in Syria, thought to come from his Islamic name Sidique.
The fourth unidentified “Beatle” is now strongly suspected to also be from West London.
One suspect is former rapper Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, better known as the “hip-hop jihadist”.
Before he set off to Syria, he too was said to be seen regularly praying at Al Manaar.
Bary, 25, was last pictured on Twitter holding a severed head in Syria above the caption “Chillin’ with my other homie, or what’s left of him”.
For a long time he was thought to be Jidahi John until Emwazi was unmasked.
Bary, who had tracks played on BBC radio during his rapping days, once tweeted a picture of the Al Manaar’s mosque.
Writing under the Twitter handle Abu Klashnikov, which has now been deleted, he said of the building near Ladbroke Grove, “aah grove mosque miss dat, ramadan times subhanalla [God is glorious]”.
His father, Adel Bari, was arrested when he was only six years old.
Both Emwazi and Kotey have been connected to the “London Boys”, a network of extremists who exchanged essays on radical Islam while playing five-a-side football.
The four London Boys, also from Ladbroke Grove, were arrested in Kenya in 2006 while allegedly fighting jihad for al-Shabaab in Somalia.
They were reportedly picked up by British SAS soldiers and then flown home at Foreign Office expense, causing an outcry at the time.
All four later denied accusations of being involved in terrorism.
Another Al Manaar worshipper was local boy Hamza Parvez, later known as Abu Hamza al-Britani.
Parvez previously worked at the Ibis hotel in Shepherd’s Bush and left his family without warning to join ISIS.

Terror group: ISIS jihadi waves a flag
He is said to have seen combat in Syria.
His best friend Mohammed Nasser, a former firefighter who travelled to Syria with Parvez, is also thought to have attended the mosque.
Nasser died in 2014 when he was hit by a piece of shrapnel between the eyes.
Kotey, who was born Christian but converted to Islam, has been described as a key IS recruiter in west London.
He is thought to have helped radicalise brothers Flamur and Fatlam Shakalu.
Fatlam, 20, known as Abu Musa al-Britani, became a suicide bomber who blew himself up last May in Ramadim.
IS jihadists have been pictured using tanks

Flamur, 23, was killed fighting in March.
Engineering student Mohammed el-Araj, 23, who died in Syria in 2013, was also thought to be part of Kotey’s circle of recruits.
Fearful of retribution, none of the worshippers at the mosque wanted to be identified.
Sadly the horrific actions of the terrorists who used to meet here have already done enough damage to Al Manaar’s reputation.

Migrants Cost Taxpayers Four Times More Than They Put In…

Lord Bates claimed that the low cost of healthcare was to recognise “the valuable contribution migrants make,” despite tax paying Brits footing the bill.
Medical professionals have slammed the surcharge system, saying it has encouraged health tourism, adding to the financial struggles of the already strained health service.
Cancer Surgeon J.Merion Thomas said: “The introduction of the surcharge was a disastrous error because the unintended consequence has been to encourage health tourism at minimal cost.”

Jeremy Hunt claimed the surcharge initiative would 'make sure the NHS is better resourced'
After paying the Health Surcharge, the migrant or student is fully entitled to free NHS care.
J.Merion Thomas
He added: “After paying the Health Surcharge, the migrant or student is fully entitled to free NHS care.
“To signify payment, a ‘green banner’ appears on their computerised NHS record, which guarantees unlimited treatment, even for pre-existing conditions.”
The legislation brought in by the Tory-Lib Dem coalition government introduced a yearly £200 surcharge for migrants who stay in the UK for more than six months– with migrant students paying a reduced sum of £150 a year.
migrants

The government initiative offers NHS treatment to migrants for £200 a month
At the time Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt promised this would “make sure the NHS is better resourced”, but damning figures have revealed migrants are taking out a lot more than they are putting in to the beleaguered health service.
Early government projections claimed the surcharge would bring in £200 million for the NHS – just 0.2 per cent of the NHS’s £116.4billion budget.
Meanwhile the £200 sum, which gives migrants access to a huge range of treatments that the NHS provide, is less than a sixth of the £1,280 a Brit on a £30,000 salary puts into the health service every year.
But despite the government deciding on the yearly figure in a bid to help the struggling health service, Conservative Home office minister Lord Bates has claimed migrants are costing the NHS “just more than £800 per head”– adding up to a total cost of “more than £500million a year”.
He added that students who pay lower rates cost the NHS “just more than £700 per head, with a total gross cost to the NHS of £430m per year”
The Lord later admitted to fellow peers that the surcharge was “set well below the true cost to the NHS of treating temporary migrants”.
He added: “The low level recognises the valuable contribution migrants make, and the need to ensure the UK remains an attractive destination for global talent”.
A Department of Health spokesman said: “We are focused on extending charging to other areas of healthcare, expecting to recover up to £500m a year by 2018 from visitors using the NHS”.

Albanian national Dorian Puka, 21, was filmed forcing his way into the property in Twickenham, south west London, by a wifi webcam.
Stunned homeowner David Pearce, who was watching his home being broken into while he was on holiday, called his neighbours to chase the men away.
Two men fled the scene at around 11am but Puka was caught hiding nearby.
Illegal immigrant Puka will be removed from the country after spending nine months in prison for the burglary and a pervious break-in he was linked to, UK Isleworth Crown Court heard.
Puka will be deported

Dorian Puka, 21, was jailed for two burglaries for nine months
Ruxana Nasser, prosecuting, said: "The burglary came to the attention of the owner, who had a wifi webcam set up which he could view while in France, when he noticed two men trying to force their way into his house from the back.
"He then alerted one neighbour who couldn't leave the house because they had young children, so Mr Pearce alerted another.
"They immediately went to the premises and noticed that the patio doors were open.
He then shouted 'police, police, you b*******, I can do karate'.
"Two males then came running from the property and left."
The court heard one of the men escaped in a BMW, the registration of which another neighbour noted down, while Puka ran off and hid in a bush.
A month before, on July 4, Puka's legs had been spotted "flailing" through the window of a property he was attempting to burgle in Ealing, west London.

On that occasion he made off with £20 worth of goods, but left behind a glove in the back garden of the property, which was then connected to the Twickenham burglary by DNA.
Jemima Ivens, in mitigation for Puka, said she didn't believe the burglaries had been carried out with much degree of planning.
But Judge Robin Johnson interjected: "Why do people have gloves in the summer?"
Ms Ivens backtracked, replied: "I think with regard to the glove, it is at the lower end of the category.
"The other burglary, where the complainant saw the incident from his webcam in France, the facts don't demonstrate greater harm but certainly a car is used so there is an amount of planning."
She added Puka was a man of "previous good character" and said he had agreed to deportation.
Jailing Puka, Judge Johnson told him: "Those who break into others' houses in this country go to prison.
"You were with a confederate, there was a certain amount of planning and there were two offences.
"You have not been in this country for a long amount of time and are, according to the probation officer, an illegal immigrant.
"I don't have the power to deport you, but if I did have the power to deport you I would."
Puka, of no fixed abode, will be deported within the next two months by the Home Office after signing an agreement.

A teenager who kicked a Good Samaritan repeatedly in the face after she gave him directions before bottling and stabbing a stranger in an off-licence has been jailed for 18 years.
Abdul Rahim Sowe, 19, attacked his first victim in Haverstock Hill, north-west London, after asking her for directions to the local mosque, a court heard.
He became abusive, accusing her of lying and punching her in the face several times until she fell to the ground.
Sowe kicked her in the face repeatedly before stealing money from her purse and walking away, a court was told.
Later that day, he entered an off-licence in Camden High Street and hit a male shopper over the head with a glass bottle full of alcohol until he passed out.
Sowe smashed bottles over his face, before stabbing him in the throat with a pair of scissors as he lay unconscious, leaving him in a coma and needing extensive re-constructive surgery.
He was sentenced to 18 years in prison and five additional years on licence after pleading guilty to attempted murder and ABH at Blackfriars Crown Court.Having viewed the CCTV footage of the off-licence attack, Judge Peter Clarke said "This is the most extreme violence I have seen recorded in my 43 years at the bar, I have not seen anything like it."
Detective Constable Sham Razzak, from Camden community safety unit said: "His first victim was attacked as she guided him to a place of worship whilst the second victim spent two months in hospital and is still being fed through a tube - through his stomach - due to the extensive injuries he suffered in his throat.”

A man who attempted to rape two women in separate attacks in east London has today been jailed for 12 years.
Usman Tahir, 25, of Ridley Road, Dalston, “targeted and preyed” on vulnerable woman as they walked home late at night.
Tahir approached one of the victims in Dalston Lane on September 24 last year and ushered her into a quiet street away from her friends.
He forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her before she was able to fight him off and raise the alarm.
Detectives examined CCTV footage but Tahir’s face was not seen and no DNA match was found on the National DNA database.
But police investigating the assault found the DNA taken from the victim was also linked to another sexual assault which took place four months earlier on May 24.
The victim had been followed by the attacker and pushed to the ground before being seriously assaulted.
The woman tried to fight off her attacker but he repeatedly punched her in the face, causing serious injuries.
Tahir was later arrested on September 28 after further detailed CCTV analysis was carried out.
Detectives said he was wearing the same clothing and carrying the same bag as the man captured on CCTV following the September 24 attack.
He was later charged with two counts of attempted rape after his DNA matched samples taken from both victims.
Tahir pleaded guilty to both offences at Snaresbrook Crown Court on December 17 and was today handed a total of 12 years in prison.
Detective Constable Adam Knott, from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: "Usman Tahir actively sought out, targeted and preyed on lone vulnerable females late at night for his own sexual gratification.
"I would like thank his two victims and acknowledge their courage throughout this investigation. Both were determined to attend court and see justice done.”

A 12-year-old boy was sexually assaulted on a bus when a man stroked his leg as the vehicle stopped outside a police station.
Police said the incident took place on a route 16 bus travelling towards Edgware Road at 7.50am on November 12.
The boy sat opposite a man who stroked his leg when the bus came to a stop outside Paddington Green Police Station.
The man then left the bus and walked off down Edgware Road.
Police have released a CCTV image taken from the bus of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the sexual assault.
He is described as being of Middle Eastern appearance, aged between 25 and 30, with black hair.

She managed to disarm the suspect, who then got off the bus and fled north towards Oval.

The boy suffered a minor cut to the stomach, the Metropolitan Police said, and the eight-inch knife was later recovered. Police said they were investigating the incident as an 'attempted stabbing' as the injury was a slash rather than a puncture wound.

Officers have today released CCTV footage as they hunt for the suspect.

A Met Police spokesman said: 'On 26 December 2015 at about 12:30hrs, the 15-year-old boy boarded a Route 133 bus on Brixton Road with his 51-year-old grandmother.

'The suspect, who was already on the bus, approached the victim and produced a large kitchen knife, which she attempted to stab the victim with.

'The victim's grandmother intervened and managed to disarm the suspect, who then got off the bus and fled towards Oval.'

The suspect is described as an Asian woman, aged about 20 to 30 years.
She wore a distinctive headscarf with a kangaroo print.

Anyone who was on the bus at the time of the incident or has any information, is urged to call police via 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 199092.

Aston man raped 21-year-old woman twice before casually walking away

A man violently raped a young woman as she walked to her boyfriend’s home before fleeing to his Birmingham home.
Mebrehtom Abrha, 25, was caught following a BBC Crimewatch appeal after the attack at around 6.30am on Sunday, July 19 last year.
Abrha, from Eritrea in East Africa, but now living in Aston, pursued his 21-year-old victim for 10 minutes in Toxteth, Liverpool.
Liverpool Crown Court heard how he shoved her to the ground, ripped her dress and raped her twice before casually walking away.
David McLachlan, prosecuting, said the victim had been out clubbing and saw her boyfriend, who worked in the city centre.
They agreed to meet up later and she went back to her flat, packed a bag and set off to her partner’s home.
The woman, who described herself as being “slightly drunk”, intended to catch a taxi but there were none around.
Rapist Mebrehtom Abrha, 25, was caught following a BBC Crimewatch appeal after the attack
Mr McLachlan said she began walking the mile and a half route but ran most of the way in her heels as it was raining heavily.
She did not realise anybody was following her as she passed Crown Park and only spotted her attacker when he crept up from behind.
Mr McLachlan said: “All she remembered was ending up on the ground. She guessed she had been thrown over.
“She remembered being shocked and thinking ‘this can’t be happening’.”
The young woman tried to push Abrha off but he ripped her dress open and raped her.
Mr McLachlan said: “She started screaming, She was shouting ‘please don’t’. She said ‘I’m a virgin, please don’t do this to me’.
“She described how he got up and walked away in a casual manner. He didn’t run away, he just walked off.”
Mr McLachlan said Abrha did not speak during the four-minute ordeal “apart from the odd phrase ‘get a better number’.”
The victim, who was covered in dirt and suffered injuries to her back and neck, ran to her boyfriend’s home and he called the police.
Rapist Mebrehtom Abrha
Mr McLachlan said the woman had to undergo testing for sexually transmitted diseases, but fortunately these proved negative.
She was only able to describe her attacker as black, tall and skinny.
Police watched CCTV and, spotting the rapist, traced his movements back to 4am, when he was thrown out of Modo bar in Concert Square.
He was seen drinking on his own in two bars in Slater Street, urinating against a wall in Wood Street, and following the woman near Crown Park.
His DNA did not match any known offenders and police arranged for a reconstruction to be shown on Crimewatch on October 12.
As a result of information received afterwards, officers arrested Abrha at his home in Dunsink Road in Aston, Birmingham.
He made no comment but a DNA sample was taken, which linked him to the crime.
The court heard Abrha had been living in Egerton Road, Wavertree for a year, but fled the city after an initial Merseyside Police appeal when his picture was released.
The defendant, with black hair and beard, admitted two counts of rape through a Tigrinya interpreter in the dock. He has no previous convictions in this country.
Mr McLachan said he “humiliated and degraded” his victim, leaving her with “severe psychological harm’.
Judge David Aubrey, QC, said he needed to know what may have caused a man with no previous convictions to commit such a serious crime.
The judge said he needed to consider whether Abrha was a dangerous offender and it would be “unwise to proceed” without a pre-sentence report.
Judge Aubrey adjourned sentencing until Monday and remanded Abrha in custody.

Gang leader Mohamoud Ahmed was found guilty
Six members of a Birmingham-based drugs gang who offered a 'hotline' to customers have been jailed for a total of 47 years.
The group supplied hard drugs to addicts in Worcestershire and Humberside and were identified following a lengthy joint investigation by West Mercia and Warwickshire Police .
They were arrested and charged with a total of 16 counts of supplying Class A and Class B drugs, including cocaine, heroin and amphetamines.
Four of the men pleaded guilty at hearings in August and September 2015 and January 2016.
The remaining two gang members denied the charges but were found guilty following a trial at Worcester Crown Court.
Ringleader Mohamoud Ahmed, 24, of Melton Drive, Edgbaston, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for conspiracy to supply cocaine, conspiracy to supply heroin and conspiracy to supply MCAT.
Right-hand man Majid Jamjamle, 23, of Rodney Close, Ladywood , was jailed for 11 years on the same charges.
Both had denied the offences.
Fellow gang member Liban Mohammed, 22, of Pineapple Grove, Stirchley, admitted conspiracy to supply cocaine, heroin and MCAT. He was sentenced to six years in prison.
Abdirhaman Mohammed Hussain, 20, of Guild Close, Ladywood, was jailed for seven years after admitting conspiracy to supply cocaine, heroin and MCAT.
Tariq Noormohammed, 35, of Freer Road, Aston, admitted conspiracy to supply cocaine and heroin. He was jailed for eight and a half years, reduced to five years for an early guilty plea.
Mohammed Ismael Abdullah, 28, of Endwood Court Road, Handsworth Wood, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine and heroin and was jailed for three years and four months.
Judge HHJ Jukes said the gang operated a well-organised business involving hire of cars, dedicated drugs lines and group texts.
He said the operation was a commercial enterprise involving substantial sums of cash, run by Mohamoud Ahmed who showed contempt for the law with Majid Jamjamle acting as his right hand man. They fought the case in the face of overwhelming evidence and sought to shift the blame on to other members of gang.
Det Insp Carl Moore, senior investigating officer, said: “The defendants in this case were involved in the supply of extremely harmful controlled drugs. Their only concern was for their own financial gain.”

Many in Calais Jungle AREN'T refugees... and ARE after benefits, he says

  • Mr Justice McCloskey said many migrants have 'no real basis' to be there
  • Judge: Migrants avoid asylum in France because of UK's 'advantages'
  • Warning came in a ruling allowing four Syrian refugees to come to Britain
  • Case could lead to hundreds more applications after 'special' case

Ruling: Immigration judge Mr Justice McCloskey, said migrants are claiming asylum because of the 'perceived advantages' of lodging an application in Britain
Many migrants living in the 'Jungle' camp in Calais are 'probably not' genuine refugees who flock there just to get to the UK, a senior immigration judge said .

Mr Justice McCloskey also said many have 'no real basis' to be there and will decline to claim asylum in France in favour of Britain because of 'perceived advantages'.

He also said there was no reason for many in the squalid camp to remain there.

His warning came in a landmark ruling allowing three teenagers and a disabled man from Syria to come to Britain from Calais because their siblings are already here.

Campaigners claim the case could clear the way for hundreds more to come from the Calais camp

Justice McCloskey said their case was 'special' but admitted that it could lead to hundreds more similar asylum applications.

His full judgment, issued today said: 'It seems likely that there is no real basis for many of its occupants remaining indefinitely in The Jungle and enduring the conditions that obtain there.

'Many are probably not refugees in any general sense or any sense entitled to recognition.

'Rather, they are migrant nationals of a number of countries outside the European Union, who, while intending to make a claim for refugee status, decline to make the claim in France due to perceived advantages, correct or otherwise, of doing so in the United Kingdom.

'In general terms there is no basis at all for thinking that a person who claims asylum in France will not be treated properly and will not have the benefit of the reception and other facilities which those duties entail.'

The comments won strong applause last night. ‘The judge is absolutely right,’ said Tory MP David Davies.‘They are all economic migrants because they have travelled through many safe countries to be there.

‘There is no reason for them to be there because they could claim asylum anywhere.

They perceive that they can get more benefits and work in the UK.’ Conservative colleague Peter Bone added: ‘Judges don’t say these things lightly and he is saying what most people know – that most people there are not genuine refugees.’

Lawyers for the young men - three teenagers and a 26-year-old with mental health problems - argued that they faced 'intolerable' conditions and had a right under Article 8 of the Human Rights Act to be reunited with family members already living in Britain legally.

GERMANY FACED WITH 'NEW LEVEL OF HATE AND VIOLENCE AGAINST MIGRANTS

Anti-migrant tensions in Germany rose to a ‘new level of hate and violence’ yesterday when a live hand grenade was thrown into a refugee centre.
Police said ‘it was just luck’ that the device failed to detonate at the home in Villingen-Schwenningen in the southern state of Baden-Wurttemberg, where around 200 migrants live.
Germany took in nearly 1.1million asylum seekers last year and figures released yesterday showed there were 1,005 attacks on refugee homes there last year – five times more than in 2014.
Federal justice minister Heiko Maas said the grenade attack was a ‘new level of hate and violence’, adding: ‘We need to … ensure xenophobic crimes are more rapidly solved and punished more severely.’
The four fled Syria in September and ended up in a refugee camp known as The Jungle in Calais in October but have since been unable to get to the UK.

Speaking under the condition of anonymity, one said: ‘I’m very glad the case is now going to open the door to so many others to get here safely.’

At the High Court a week ago Mr Justice McCloskey outlined his case for granting the four young men the chance to reunite with family members who have already been granted asylum in the UK.

He said: 'The spotlight in these proceedings is on an area just across the English Channel from Dover which has become known as 'the jungle'.

'This is a bleak and desolate place on the coast of northern France. Unlike other jungles, this place is inhabited by human beings not animals.'

He recounted the experience of a 'concerned English public representative in the camp' who wrote: 'I have just returned from the camps in Calais and Dunkirk.

'The conditions are so bad, that describing them cannot capture the squalor. You have to smell conditions like these and feel the squelch of the mud to appreciate the horror.'

Mr McCloskey went on to explain that he had to balance the applicants''right to respect for a family life, under Article 8 of the Human Rights Convention' against the 'secretary of state's refusal to admit the applicants to the United Kingdom with the full rigour of the Dublin Regulations'.

He said: 'The answer to this question involves a balance of public interest, namely the maintenance of immigration control, with the family life of the applicants.'

In deciding he took into account the 'applicants ages, the mental disability with regards one of the applicants, accrued psychological damage, a clear likelihood of further psychological turmoil, their previous family life.

'The balance tips in favour of the applicants' human rights.'

George Gabriel, of charity Citizens UK, said they expect the judgment to affect 200 or 300 young people and unaccompanied minors in Calais and Dunkirk.

He added: 'We hope to roll out legal support for them in a matter of days.'

Under European asylum rules known as the Dublin Regulation, the teenagers were entitled to seek sanctuary in the UK because of their family links.

Earlier this week, the vice-president of the European Commission said that more than half of all migrants to Europe were motivated by economic reasons.

Dutch politician Frans Timmermans said most were from North African countries such as Morocco or Tunisia, where there is no conflict.

George Osborne’s new national living wage, due to reach £9 an hour by 2020, could be a ‘magnet’ that lures more European migrants to Britain, officials fear. ‘Someone sitting in southern Italy or Romania will be thinking that Britain looks a very attractive proposition,’ a Whitehall source said.

A man who slashed a bus passenger’s face after he refused to buy his cocaine has been jailed for 17 years.
Shahadat Hussain, 21, of Malmesbury Terrace, Canning Town was found guilty of grievous bodily harm and possession with intention to supply crack cocaine and heroin.
Snaresbrook Crown Court heard how in March 2015 he approached a group of 18-year-olds on the top deck of 25 bus at around 1.40am to offer them drugs.
The friends had been discussing the soft drink Coke, which Hussain had misunderstood to mean cocaine.
When he was told they did not wish to buy drugs, however, he grabbed one of the men by the neck.
A friend of the victim then intervened, at which point Hussain also attacked him by repeatedly punching and slashing him in the face.
The group managed to get off the bus and escape along the Romford Road before one of the victims was taken to Whipps Cross hospital to receive 12 stitches on the nose.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Hindmarsh, Roads and Transport Policing Command, said:
“This was a vicious, unprovoked attack on a man who refused to buy drugs from Hussain, leaving the victim with nasty injuries as a result.
“This sentence sends a strong message that crime on London’s transport network will not be tolerated.”
Officers from the Roads and Transport Policing Command, in partnership with Transport for London, then launched an investigation that led to Hussain being identified and arrested on 1 April on suspicion of GBH.
He was found in possession of a large amount of crack cocaine and heroin and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs.
Steve Burton, TfL’s Director of Enforcement and On-Street Operations, said:
“We work closely with our policing partners to ensure that all crime on our network is fully investigated and bring perpetrators to justice.
“Our thorough investigation led to the identification of this callous attacker and seeing him sentenced today sends a strong message that crime will not be tolerated on public transport.
“Our customers have the right to travel in confidence and we will continue to work hard to drive down levels of crime, which have fallen for each of the last nine years.”
Hussain was given 17 years imprisonment for GBH with intent, 46 months for possession with intention to supply crack cocaine, 46 months for possession with intent to supply heroin and seven days for possession of cannabis (the latter three to run concurrently)

Six members of a gang who received over 1,000 calls a day in a ‘drugs-to-order’ operation across east London have been jailed for a total of 33 years.
Snaresbrook Crown Court heard how the head of the gang, Sahil Patel, was in charge of a business selling Class A drugs through a phone number that received more than 66,000 calls and nearly 8,000 texts over a 92 day period.
Patel, 30, of Vernon Road, Seven Kings, had previously admitted possessing a self-loading pistol and ammunition.
He was found guilty of possessing a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life and of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and on Friday he was jailed for 16 years.
His co-conspirators, who held the drugs until needed and then delivered them to the buyers, were also sentenced at the same court on Friday.
Hamza Patel, 26, of Abbey Road, Stratford, was sentenced to six years and six months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.
Aqub Mumtaz, 21, of Monega Road, Manor Park and Roqib Ali, 37, of Sherrard Road, Manor Park, also admitted the same offence and were jailed for two years and two years and six months respectively.
Imran Shahid, 35, of Boundary Road, East Ham, was jailed for three years after admitting conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and possessing criminal property.
Shenola Nightingale, 26, of Lyndhurst Court, Woodford, was imprisoned for three years and three months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and dangerous driving.
A seventh member of the gang, Abdulkadir Mohamed, 43, of Goddards Way, Ilford, was found guilty of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and will be sentenced on April 13 following a pre-sentence report.
Two other members of the group had previously admitted possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.
Tashin Ali, 23, of Wycombe Road, Gants Hill, was sentenced to four years two months and Adeyemi Adeniyi, 51, of Maxey Road, Dagenham, was sentenced to 30 months in March last yea
Det Insp Steve Meechan said: “The sentences handed out should serve as a significant deterrent to anyone involved in criminality of this kind.
“The harm caused across east London by these criminals cannot be underestimated and I’m pleased that they now face prison for a significant length of time.”
The gang were responsible for supplying crack cocaine and heroin across Newham, Barking and Dagenham and Redbridge.
Drugs with a street value of more than £60,000 were seized by police during the investigation, where it was also discovered that an estimated 750 people contacted the gang within the three months the phone number was used.

Amir Rashid, 26, of Sebert Road was sentenced to five years and four months at Southwark Crown Court on Friday.
The 11-men gang of which he was a member stole vehicles such as BMW 5 and 6 Series and Range Rovers to order, before altering their identities to make them appear legitimate in a process known as ringing.
Detectives recovered more than 40 stolen vehicles that had been stolen and altered, valued at a total of about £1.5 million, in a co-ordinated operation between the Met and the DVLA. The men were arrested in June 2014.
Mr Rashid pleaded guilty to conspiracy to conceal, disguise, convert, and remove criminal property along with several other gang members.
The criminal activities involved the gang identifying vehicles that had been exported from the UK, before making fraudulent applications for their logbooks from the DVLA to make the stolen vehicles look legitimate.
The majority of vehicles were stolen overnight in keyless thefts, while others were stolen by gang members posing as prospective purchasers of vehicles advertised for sale. They then stole the vehicle during the course of a test drive.
Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Peter Ellis, said: “These individuals were well organised and employed sophisticated methods, both to steal the vehicles and to change their identities.
“They were ultimately responsible for the theft of a substantial number of high value vehicles, worth millions of pounds.”

Paedophile Shabir Ahmed (pictured), claims his convictions for child sex offences were a conspiracy to 'scapegoat' Muslims
The ringleader of a Rochdale child sex grooming gang is using European human rights laws in an attempt to avoid being booted out of Britain.

Paedophile Shabir Ahmed, 63 - described by a judge as a 'violent hypocritical bully' - claims his convictions for child sex offences were a conspiracy to 'scapegoat' Muslims, his immigration tribunal today heard.

The convicted abuser has written to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to appeal against his impending deportation from the UK.

His case will once again spark fears about how foreign criminals are trying to exploit human rights laws to remain in the country.

Ahmed, serving 22 years in jail, was convicted in 2012 of being the ringleader of a group of Asian men who preyed on girls as young as 13 in Rochdale, plying them with drink and drugs before they were 'passed around' for sex.

He appeared before the First Tier Immigration Tribunal, sitting at Manchester Crown Court, on Tuesday to appeal against the decision by Secretary of State Theresa May to strip him of his British citizenship, the first stage in the deportation process.

Three judges will decide on his appeal, as well as on appeals by three other men who were part of the same gang and who also face deportation.

Ahmed, who sat in the dock flanked by prison officers, told the court: 'She (Theresa May) says all her trouble is coming from Muslims, yet she's the biggest trouble causer in the world.'

He said he was convicted by 'eleven white jurors', adding: 'It's become fashionable to blame everything on Muslims these days.'

Vinesh Mandalia, representing the Home Office, told the tribunal Mrs May had exercised her right as the Home Office minister to deprive Ahmed  - who was nicknamed 'Daddy' - of British citizenship 'if it is conducive to public good'.

Mr Mandalia said Ahmed's appeal against depriving him of British citizenship included an appeal to the ECHR against his criminal convictions, which had been acknowledged by that court but did not mean they would hear his case.

'He explains simply on human rights grounds the conviction is unsafe on the basis it was a conspiracy by everyone involved,' Mr Mandalia said.

Ahmed's appeal states his trial was 'tainted' and a 'miscarriage of justice' as it was 'institutionally racist' using Muslims as 'scapegoats'.

Mr Mandalia said: 'The public interest weighs heavily in favour of the Secretary of State, to ensure those granted the benefits of British citizenship, however that comes to arise, know the responsibilities that go with it.

'And if you get involved in very serious organised crime then one of the consequences of that is that they will be deprived of their British citizenship.'

He said divorced father-of-four Ahmed, who first came to the UK in 1967 aged 14, is a British citizen, but would not be rendered stateless as he retains Pakistani nationality having been born in Gujrat.

Three times married Ahmed told the court he had four children living in the UK, had lived here for nearly 50 years and had £83,000 in a UK bank account.

Ahmed was given a 19-year sentence at Liverpool Crown Court in May 2012 for a string of child sex offences, including rape.

He was also jailed for 22 years, to run concurrently, in July 2012 for 30 rapes against another victim.

Presiding tribunal Judge Michael Clements reserved his decision on Ahmed and the appeal of a second man, Qari Abdul Rauf.

Taxi driver Rauf, 47, a father-of-five, was released on licence last year after serving half of a six-year sentence for trafficking a girl, aged 15, in the UK for sex, and for having sex with the youngster himself.

If you get involved in very serious organised crime then one of the consequences of that is that they will be deprived of their British citizenship
Vinesh Mandalia, representing the Home Office
Rauf, who also acted as a religious studies teacher at a mosque in Rochdale, burst into tears, and through his Urdu interpreter asked the immigration tribunal for 'mercy' and that he 'wanted a second chance'.

Two more men convicted of child sex offences in the Rochdale case, Abdul Aziz and Adil Khan, will have their appeals heard in Manchester on Wednesday.

If the appeals fail all four can take their case to the Upper Tribunal, so any final decision on deportation could be some way off.

The move is the latest in a series of cases in which serious foreign criminals have attempted to avoid being kicked out of Britain by claiming their human rights had been violated.

In a move popular with swathes of the public, the Tories have pledged to scrap Labour’s controversial Human Rights Act.

Opposed by a raft of Left-wing ‘luvvies’, the move would – for the first time – acknowledge that rights must be accompanied by responsibilities.

A family of Somali refugees who sparked a row over council housing when they were given a £2million taxpayer-funded mansion have been moved out - into a £1.3million semi around the corner.

Unemployed Saeed Khaliif, his wife Sayida and their brood provoked uproar in 2011 when they moved into one of the most expensive properties ever to be funded by housing benefit.

It emerged today that the family have now vacated the six-bedroom property in West Hampstead, north-west London, due to changes in the welfare system.

But campaigners have been left further outraged after they were given a property worth £3,000-a-month in rent in an up-and-coming area of the capital.

It is understood that Mr Khaliif has not worked since he arrived in Britain in 2008.

The family were initially housed in a £1,000-a-month property in Coventry, West Midlands.

But they caused anger when they decided they would rather live in London and were handed the keys to the huge house not far from the homes of popstar Boy George and movie director Ridley Scott.

Their case was one of a number which exposed just how much was being paid out for housing benefit and prompted the government to cap benefits at £500 a week for couples with children.

After the limit was imposed, Camden council moved the couple and their reported eight children into the new property in up-and-coming Cricklewood.

Neighbours say the house underwent significant renovation before the family were moved in.
Local resident Pedro Rodriguez said:

'The council have given them a home of luxury and spent thousands renovating it before they moved in.

'The house is huge and it has been decorated to a very high standard with an open-plan layout, high spec kitchen and slate patio.'

Mr Rodriguez added: 'They do no open the door to council staff. It's not right some people are given so much for free when others are struggling.'

The council own the property and is said to keep rents within the benefit cap, while similar properties in nearby streets command amounts of up to£3,000-a-month.

Dia Chakravarty, Political Director at the TaxPayers' Alliance said: 'The welfare system is meant to be a safety net for those who are struggling, not a comfort blanket.

'Hard-pressed families struggling with their bills will be furious at such an extortionate amount being spent on housing a single family in one of the most expensive areas in London.'

It is understood the couple are entitled to such a large property because two of their children have disabilities.

A council spokesman said: 'Our council homes are allocated on a needs basis in line with our policy and Government legislation.'

At the house today, no one from the family was prepared to comment.

Thousands of pupils at unregistered schools 'are at risk of radicalisation because of misogynistic, homophobic and Islamic-focused curriculums,' experts fear

  • 21 schools reportedly being investigated, some over radicalisation fears
  • Concern that pupils are being taught 'narrow Islamic-focused curriculums'
  • Inspectors reportedly found schools which haven't registered teaching hate-filled, misogynistic, homophobic and anti-Semitic material to children

At least 21 schools that haven't been officially registered in Britain are being investigated over fears some of them are radicalising pupils with 'narrow Islamic-focused curriculums', it has been claimed.

Education chiefs are said to be probing a host of 'illegal' schools across the country, a number of which are allegedly teaching hate-filled, misogynistic, homophobic and anti-Semitic material to children.

Shadow education secretary Lucy Powell said ministers needed to take immediate action to deal with the issue, claiming children at unregistered schools 'could be in harm's way'.

The Labour MP told The Sun: 'Despite warning after warning, they [ministers] have dragged their feet, leaving children in unregistered schools where they could be in harm's way.

'It is extremely worrying that Ofsted remains concerned that the number of children being educated in unregistered provision far exceeds the number currently known by the Government.'

The newspaper reported that at least 21 schools are currently under investigation with inspectors apparently finding a number of cases of children being taught 'narrow Islamic-focused curriculums'.

It is unclear exactly how many pupils are being taught at the 'illegal' schools, but experts say each unregistered institution tends to have fewer than 100 - particularly because some schools are based out of small religious centres or even people's homes.

The Department for Education said there would be 'no single knockout blow against those who seek to corrupt young people' but confirmed it was taking action to protect children from 'illegal' schools.

A spokesman added: 'We are taking unprecedented and direct action across the board to protect children, inform parents and support teachers, putting us firmly on the front foot.'

It comes after Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to 'shut down' schools which were 'filling children's heads with poison and hearts with hate' in his Tory conference speech last October.

Vowing to stand up to 'passive tolerance' which leaves children vulnerable to extremists, Mr Cameron announced inspectors would shut down Islamic religious schools promoting hate.

He also said some mosques in Britain were promoting hate and vowed to shut them down. In his Conservative conference speech, he said: 'Let me be clear: there is nothing wrong with children learning about their faith, whether it's at Madrassas, Sunday Schools or Jewish Yeshivas.

'But in some Madrassas we've got children being taught that they shouldn't mix with people of other religions; being beaten; swallowing conspiracy theories about Jewish people.

'These children should be having their minds opened, their horizons broadened - not having their heads filled with poison and their hearts filled with hate.

'So I can announce this: If an institution is teaching children intensively, then whatever its religion, we will, like any other school, make it register so it can be inspected.

'And be in no doubt: if you are teaching intolerance, we will shut you down.'

Two months after his warning, Ofsted set up a special task force to uncover unregistered schools operation outside of English laws.

The schools regulator said it had already uncovered unregistered Muslim faith schools which keep pupils in squalid conditions and teach a 'narrow' Islamic curriculum and said they pose 'a serious and growing threat' to the safety of hundreds of children, who may be vulnerable to extremism.

In December, inspectors shut down three unregistered schools in Birmingham, with one using 'anti-Semitic, homophobic and misogynistic material'.

Conditions in one were described as 'unhygienic and filthy'. A total of 94 pupils were being taught by adults who had not been suitably checked for work with children.

Ofsted has already found 15 such 'hidden' schools in the past year, running full timetables and involving about 800 pupils.

It is understood a large number of them catered for Muslim communities, but there were also schools of other faiths.

There are fears the true scale of Britain's secret schools could surpass that of the Trojan Horse scandal – in which state schools were infiltrated by hardline Islamists – as inspectors may have uncovered only the 'tip of the iceberg'.

David Cameron needs to visit Junead and Shazib Khan personally, apologize to them for the crimes against Muslims that led them to become “radicalized,” and promise to do better in the future. A handsome cash gift would help as well.

“Delivery driver ‘planned to attack military personnel in Britain,'” by Tom Whitehead, Telegraph, February 16, 2016
An Isil-inspired delivery driver planned to attack US or UK airmen outside their bases in Britain, a court heard.
Junead Khan, 25, allegedly used his route as a health goods deliveryman to drive past RAF bases used by the US in East Anglia, Kingston Crown Court was told.
Khan, from Luton, had originally planned to travel to Syria to join Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (Isil) along with his uncle Shazib Khan.
But he changed his plans in May last year and turned his focus to attacking military personnel in Britain instead.
Opening the case, prosecutor Max Hill QC said Khan worked for TRG Logistics as a contracted driver delivering pharmaceuticals goods for Alliance Healthcare.
“It was this work that brought Khan near to armed forces bases including USAF bases in Norfolk (and Suffolk), which is relevant to Count 2 and Khan’s intentions in the period May to July,” Mr Hill said.
It included RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath which are used by the US Air Force.
Khan denies two counts of preparing an act of terrorism, in relation to his alleged plans to travel to Syria and later alleged plans to attack airmen or women in the UK.
Mr Hill told the jury it did not matter, in terms of the charge, whether Khan planned to attack British soldiers American airmen.
Shazib Khan, 23, who is Khan’s uncle despite being two years younger, denies one count of preparing an act of terrorism in connection with alleged plans to travel to Syria.
Mr Hill said Shazib Khan is not charged with any offence in connection with his nephew’s plans for a terror attack in the UK.
But both are accused of preparing to join Isil in Syria….
